How come a stainless steel draining board stinks of rotten eggs?

I had the new kitchen installed 7yrs ago. I noticed an awful smell a little while ago. On investigating I found that it was coming from the draining board. It has been washed with Cif a few times a week and also at least 1 lot of dishes are drained on it every day! I can't understand how stainless steel can stink. The dishwasher is under it but I keep that clean and it is used once a day.Could the housing that it is in have rotted? Is it time to install a new stainless steel unit or another medium?

  1. Its not the ss that is stinking.

  2. Block somewhere in your pipe? The trap in your sink waste should stop that smell if not I would suggest some high powered sink unbl;ocker.

  3. you might find that the worktop has got water in it and has started to rot

  4. Bacteria will find a food source wherever it may be. You must keep looking. If you can smell it, it is there.

  5. Try washing it down with baking soda, rinse and use vinegar. If this dosn't work look at the framework

  6. There is probably food residue in the cracks where the edge of the board meets the unit EDIT....my friend is a nurse and told me that she uses COCA COLA (coke) to clean medical tubes....it eats through matter like acid....pour a generous amount into the cracks

  7. It could be from the housing, but stainless will have an odor as the metal reacts with different kinds of food and bacteria. I have a stainless steel sink, and it does the same thing. When there is an odor wash it with detergent, then wipe it down with white vinegar. About once a month I take a cloth and wipe it with olive oil, leave it for a while then rinse with super hot water. The grooves in stainless are very fine, even when you think you've cleaned it food particles and juices can get stuck in the spun grooves. You can't see anything but it's there. Daily rinsing and wiping with boiling water and then shining with rubbing alcohol is the best to maintain, it will look brand new. Rubbing alcohol and a cotton cloth does a wonderful job on any stainless appliance. Good luck!
