Is stress relieving really required for gray cast iron before machining it?
I work for a manufacturing firm and they subject all of the gray cast iron castings to stress relieving. Is it really required and if yes how to improve the heat treatment process. Please provide me links where i can find information on this subject

- yes it's necessary, it relieves residual stress in the castings. If not then most likely it will crack during machining. Note cast iron is the sluffs off of steel forging--- it contains a lot of impurity's and is not as ductile as carbon steel
