How do kinetics and equilibrium affect the usefulness of a manufacturing process?

When a chemical company employs a new reaction to manufacture a product, the chemists consider its rate (kinetics) and yield (equilibrium). How do each of these affect the usefulness of a manufacturing process?

  1. Equilibrium tells you the ratio of reactants to products once the reaction is done, while kinetics tells you how much time is needed to reach equilibrium. A good manufacturing process must be fast enough (kinetics) to be cost effective, and must form enough product (equilibrium) to be cost effective.
