Rubber and plastic mouth piece for saxophone?

I'm planning on getting a rubber mouth piece for a substitution for my original plastic mouth piece for the saxophone but I don't know the difference, besides that one is rubber and the other is plastic. Is there a richer sound quality or something? I don't plan on getting a metal mouth piece because metal could poison you.

  1. "metal" can poison you? Quickly!! Throw away all your silverware.

Listen, I had a really hard time ever getting in tune with my tenor sax after changing to a rubber mouth piece (plastic chipped and kind of broke).

It sucks, because mouthpieces are (were) kind of expensive and you can't really try them out, to see what sounds good. I never played the same after I got rid of my plastic mouth piece.

  2. The make up of a mouthpiece does affect the tone. What change it makes will depend a lot on the person more than the mouthpiece. If you are looking for a new mouthpiece, just go try. Though Mike says otherwise, I haven't found a music store yet that will not let you try the mouthpieces and even possibly borrow them for a week to try playing them in "real life" situations. And no, metal mouthpieces will not poison you.
