Where can I find most electronic components and wire?

I have recently started electronics and have bought a breadboard and soldering iron. What is a store where I can find most wires and components (I've tried radioshack no wire there). A real store please, not an online one. Also, what type of wire should I use for general circuits?

  1. Do you have a Fry's Electronics store where you live? I generally buy my stuff Online for any electronic projects. The closes electronic store, like what you're looking for, is about 90 miles away from my house. It's easier just ordering on line. Since you're not interested, I won't mention them.

  2. electronic stores are not very common at all, i would say a good 90% of electronic hobbyists order offline. radioshack is not a very good supply store, not only are they expensive (99 cents for 5 resistors compared to a penny a piece at most online stores) but they dont carry lot of parts.

like somebody else suggested, if you have live in one of the nine staes with frys in it then excellent, but if you only have radioshacks (like me) then online is your best option.

these sites are the ones i use, and are suggested in the "electronics projects for dummies" book, they are very reliable, safe, and decently priced

    futurlec.com (my fav)

    jameco.com

digikey.com (a bit hard to find what your looking for but good prices)

    outpost.com (frys online store)

    goldmine-elec.com

hope this helps and good luck with your new hobby
