What is the main components of crude oil?

Hello, im doing a research on crude oil, and i need to know whats the components of crude oil is. The problem is i cant really find it. Thank you for all of your help.

  1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crude_oil

  2. Well it's main components are carbon and hydrogen, thats why they call the compounds hydrocarbons. Crude oil generally also has other "impurities" like sulfur, oxygen, etc that must be removed by distillation.

  3. Millions of compounds of Hydrogen and Carbon called Hydrocarbons.

They all form 'Families' as follows:

1....Aliphatic hydrocarbons:- (straight or branch (iso) chains).

a)...Saturated molecules (hydrogen full) called 'ALKANES'

b)...Unsaturated molecules (missing some hydrogen), called..

    .......'ALKENES'....(or Olefins).

    .......'ALKYNES'.

    .......'ALKA-DIENES'

2....Cyclic hydrocarbons: - Ring shaped molecules.

    a)..Saturated 'CYCLO-ALKANES' (Naphthenes)

    b)..Unsaturated

    ..... 'CYCLO-ALKENES' (cyclo-olefins)

    ..... 'CYCLO-DIENES'

..... 'AROMATICS' ..(Based on the Benzene Ring).

All of these are present in Crude Oil and from them, just about anything you come across is produced from compounds containing these molecules.

There are millions of products using Organic Chemistry in their make-up.

Tar for the roads, Gasolines, Diesel and other Fuels (Liquid and Gas), Plastics, Cosmetics, Medicines, Clothing (Nylon & other man-made fibres), ...the list goes on....

    Does this help your research?
