Engineering and fabrication

What type of engineering major do you need to design and test products?

Is that even an engineering field. I assume it would be electrical but what concentration of degree would it be to do that? When I say products I mean equipment such as a radar detector, digital camera, navigation system, anything with a computer in it essentially.

  1. I used to work for an electrical company. Most of the engineers are electrical engineers...and some are mechanical engineers.

I would say EE is your best bet!

    Good luck!

  2. An engineer with a BS or MS degree in one of the following: Industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering.

These are typically Quality Control Engineers or OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) Engineers.

What these people do is, they will design and conduct tests to evaluate systems or devices in order to make sure that they meet all manufacture parameters and specifications. Or, if an outside supplier is providing an OEM device to go into a new system design, the OEM engineer will design and conduct environmental tests to make certain that the OEM will meet system specifications under varied conditions, and write engineering reports on findings and make presentations at board meetings, etc.

A good Quality Control, or OEM, engineer should hold at least a BS degree in an engineering field and have at least 2 years experience in that line of work, in my opinion.

  3. I think this website may help you in the information you need on career in civil engineering.

  4. Design and testing tend to be done by separate people, and for good reason.
