How to prevent slippage of hardened steel tensiles in a tensile tester?
I am using an Instron testing instrument and have repeated problems with tensile slippage. We have purchased new steel grips and clean them daily. I have tried several different methods of "wrapping" the tensile ends (sandpaper, duct tape, even steel epoxy). Help!

- Try machining the test area down to a small fraction of the gripping area.
- From a practical point of view, the first answer will work. Another suggestion... call Instron, they are typically very good on tech support. It may be that the knurled surface of the jaws are worn or were not hardened sufficiently but, if you got new ones, that's probably not the issue. You might investigate custom grips designed specifically for a particular tensile coupon (this might make financial sense if you can save time on fabrication of samples or save time on running the tests or reduce the number of samples you have to make to get representative data).
