How many people die in surgery every year?

I am due to have my very first surgery here in the next month and am getting very nervous. I would just like an estimated answer of how many people die in surgery (in the United States) every year.

Public Comments

  1. i can tell you not a lot! estimation:999 out of 1,000

  2. Only the ones that are dead.

  3. Don't forget it 99% also depends on the condition of the patient BEFORE surgery. Say a traffic accident victim came in for surgery and his head was torn to bits, but surgery might save his or her life. Chances are higher that the person might die during surgery. Which brings up the statistic. But if no surgery were done at all the patient would die for sure. If you are in good health before surgery (heart, weight etc) No worries. 99.9999% success rate I'd say.
