Whenever I put them in the dishwasher I get these spots. They rub off, but they're supposed to be stainless. Can you get rusty spots on stainless?
to prolong the life of them just make sure you dry them and maybe start washing them by hand so they arent sitting in water. dont sit them in the washing up basin either!
hopefully thats the end to your problem!!
Depending on the grade of stainless the amount of carbon steel (and other metals) will vary.
Knives are a fine line, the higher the grade of stainless (less carbon) the harder they are to sharpen well. The higher the proportion of carbon the easier they are to sharpen, but you can get rust spots.
Of course you can get rust spots when they get against something that rusts.
The best knife blades are carbon steel that you take good care of.
Good luck!
Contrary to what many people believe, under certain conditions rust spots can appear on stainless steel due to the passivation (?)
layer breaking down.

Even the Towle stainless flatware site has this recommendation:
4. How do I clean my stainless?
Although our stainless is dishwasher safe, we recommend hand washing and drying, as the drying cycle of your dishwasher may be too harsh for the flatware's surface.
We always recommend hand washing and hand drying your sterling silver flatware. Also, be sure never to wrap fine sterling flatware in elastic, newspaper, or plastics as the chemicals in these materials can damage your sterling flatware's beautiful surface.

How to Remove Rust From Stainless Steel Flatware
By Bambi Turner, eHow Editor
Knives
Stainless steel is a metal alloy composed of steel and chromium. While it is less likely to rust than other steel varieties, it is still susceptible to corrosion when left wet or unprotected for long periods of time.
Many people are afraid to treat this material using traditional rust removal products due to the fear of creating scratches or other damage. Fortunately, it is possible to remove rust from stainless steel flatware using simple household products.
This project is very easy and can be completed by the average homeowner in just a few hours,
leaving flatware looking shiny and rust-free.
Good luck!
