I have a parrot and don't want teflon coated pans, but stainless steel pans vary from 100 to thousands, where is the middle ground of a good cook set that will perform well, and a price that is affordable. I enjoy cooking a lot, and would like a well performing set... any suggestions?

In stainless steel, look for a) handles that are riveted on, not screwed on. b)heavyweight (lightweight cookware will scorch your food faster) and c) cookware that does not have a plate on the bottom.
Stainless steel does not conduct heat very well, so manufacturers add aluminum to a base plate at the bottom. This means that all the heat concentrates there, and if your food is cooking too hot and you turn the heat down, it takes far longer for the pan to cool down to the desired temperature.i.e. burnt. Also in pots like saucepans, the sides are not helping you cook, only the bottoms, so your foods cook unevenly. What you want to look for are pans that have no baseplate where the aluminum runs throughout the entire pan and up the sides.
I don't know what affordable means to you, but here are a few ranges... Calphalon triply $400 for 13 pc. set (EXCELLENT quality good price) Emeril Pro (not the ones with baseplates, he has a new set that is fully lined) $300 for 10 pc set. and If you must go into the $150 range, Cuisinart makes a set with baseplates, but is fairly decent.
Look for bed bath and beyond coupons and deals, they have been running a calphalon deal. you'll save $80 on the set with a coupon and they give you a $50 gift card on the spot.
