What is the reaction of aluminum and sodium hydroxide?

I need to know the reaction of aluminum and sodium hydroxide in the form of a formula? I've been researching this and apparently all the ones I've found are wrong :( so for all of you who can actually figure this out, thanks so much!

  1. Well, lets see ... Aluminum is Al+ and Sodium Hydroxide is NaOH, which is a strong base, so it dissociates in water as Na+ and OH - ... So, you essentially will have ...

    Al+ + Na+ + OH - --> AlOH + Na+

    I'm not 100% positive on this, but it makes sense to me! The positive ion has to pair with the negatively charged ion! ... Hope it helps!

  2. In the presence of water this is a two step process.

    2Al + 6H2O = 2Al(OH)3 + 3H2. (Hydrogen actually evolved in the lab.)

    Al(OH)3 + NaOH = Na+ + {Al(OH)4}-
