What does it cost to replace aluminum new construction windows with vinyl windows?

How much "extra" should it cost to remove an aluminum new construction window vs. a wood window? The current aluminum window has nailing fins on it which I assume need cut off. MJ, the current aluminum windows are very poor quality. I contracted Home Depot and agreed on a price but they came back 3 weeks later wanting more money to remove the aluminum windows since they had nailing fins on them. Any idea on if this sounds right? Seems suspicious to me.

  1. It doesn't cost extra to remove the windows, it is the windows, replacing the old that cost more or less.

Having worked with windows for many years, I felt obligated to let you know that aluminum ones have better sound barrier, heat and air transfer reduction, and longer life than the vinyl ones. It would take a 11 inch thick vinyl window to nearly match the quality of a 3 inch aluminum one. The vinyl are also prone to allowing the gas between the panes to escape which allows air and moisture in causing molding issues within about 3-5 years. Then you will need to replace them again.
